Hello there, @politotile. I'm here to help you adjust your employee state tax withholding in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @politotile.

Here's how:

  1. In your QBO account, go to the Payroll menu and choose Employees.
  2. Next, select your employee from the list.
  3. From the Employment details section, select or add the work location where you’re required to pay State Unemployment Insurance. This might be different from where your employee physically works.
  4. Then, in the Tax withholding section, scroll to the State withholding section
  5. When you see a Local Taxes or Other taxes section, choose the applicable taxes and/or enter the rates.
  6. If you or your employee are exempt from any taxes (not common), from Tax Exemptions, select the applicable tax(es).
  7. Once finished, select Done

You'll also want to reach out to our Payroll support team for further assistance in adjusting the employee's state tax withholdings.

Also, running payroll reports in QBO is a breeze. These reports will help you monitor your business finances, see your employee details, and review your company information.

Leave a comment below if you have any other payroll concerns in QBO. I'm always around to help. Have a good one.

Thanks so much for the reply.  The weird thing is, there is no state section to edit. It goes from federal to local. State taxes are taken out though. I can edit other employees state withholding but not this one employee. Address is up to date and everything looks the same as other employees. Really strange

Thanks for getting back to us, politotile.

You can run some troubleshooting steps to isolate why you're unable to modify the state withholding of an employee.

To start with, try editing the rate on an incognito window. It is the safest place to identify a browser-related issue. You can use these shortcut keys to open one:

  • For Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • For Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • For Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P
  • For Safari: Command Shift N

If you can modify it, you can go back to a regular browser and clear its cache. A piled cache can also be the reason for an unexpected error in the browser.

You can also use a different browser like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.

Keep me posted as to how these steps work on your end. I want to ensure that everything goes well on your end.
