How do you modify the tax rates for bonus or comission checks?  Current setup automatically deducts over 30% for Federal taxes alone, and 45% of gross pay which is above tax bracket.  I'm trying to figure out how to modify???

I'm here to guide you in the right direction on how to modify the tax rates for the bonus or commission checks, vgallets.

In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Payroll, pay a bonus either with a regular or a separate check. When you select the first option, the bonus amount is taxed in the same manner as the employee's salary, and any percentage deductions will be taken out of the bonus.

If you decide to make a separate bonus check, please take note of the following:

  • You can apply the federal supplemental tax rate of 22% or 37% for bonuses of $1,000,000 or more.
  • You have the option of paying the bonus as gross pay or as net pay. For the net pay example, if you want your employee to take home $1000, the payroll product will gross this up and you’ll pay the employee's share of taxes.

Regarding your concern, you will have to manually adjust federal or state withholding taxes. Here's an article that discusses how the payroll service handles the transaction: Pay an employee bonus.

For your commission, you can enter it as the main salary or in addition to the employee's regular pay. While commission-based employees, I recommend following federal and state laws to stay in compliance with the regulations. You can contact the agency or consult an accountant for further assistance. Check out the following article for more details: Pay your employees a commission.

I've included a link to the QuickBooks Desktop Payroll hub for your convenience. It covers topics like managing taxes, processing payroll, handling employee information, and other payroll-related tasks.
