Question

I cannot file Form 940 through Intuit Quickbooks. It claims the form cannot be electronically filed. E-filing is part of our payroll package. Any suggestions?

Hello, @KH-19.

Let me share steps to help resolve your concern about e-filing Form 940 in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

You are correct. E-filing for the 940 Form is available and supported by all QBO Payroll subscriptions. Sometimes, QBO doesn't allow us to print the 940 tax form if we have pending dues for certain taxes. I'd recommend checking your Taxes menu to check if you have pending dues so you can proceed with e-filing.

  1. In your QBO account, go to Taxes.
  2. Select Payroll tax.
  3. Check if you have pending dues under ACTION NEEDED.
  4. If you have already paid the tax outside of QBO, select the Pay drop-down and select Mark as paid.
  5. Try e-filing your Form 940.

If this doesn't fix the issue, I encourage contacting our Support team to examine what's causing the error. Rest assured, they have the right tools to pull up your account in a safe environment. Here's how you can reach out to them:

  1. Go to Help (?).
  2. Select the Search tab.
  3. Click on Contact Us.
  4. Enter your concern, then select Let's talk.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
  • Start a chat with a support expert.
  • Get a callback from the next available expert.
