Question

I’m wondering how/if it’s necessary to track commuting miles? There’s a line for it on schedule C, but I can only categorize miles as business or personal.

Thanks for joining the Community, @samueljkunkel-gm. I've got just the information about tracking commute mileage to suit your needs. I’ll be here to help answer your questions.

Ideally, mileage in QuickBooks is for tracking purposes only. Since you mentioned commute mileage, I’d like to let you know that it’s different from business mileage. It'd also be best to consult a tax expert to properly guide you through this.

You can check out this article as your guide in differentiating between commute mileage and business mileage.

You can organize your Chart of Accounts so that it’ll match with Schedule C accounts or categories. You can also create accounts if necessary, then manually record the expenses associated with them. This will allow you to report the income you’ve generated or lost in your business to the IRS.

Additionally, this information can be seen in the Profit and Loss report. Once they correspond with each other, the report will provide you with the correct numbers. Thus, you no longer need to open other reports.
