Hi there, chadj1328.

Allow me to provide information on adding paycheck garnishments in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

A garnishment is an order issued by a court, the federal government, or a state agency, requiring an employer to withhold a portion of an employee's wages and send the money to a creditor or agency. The order may also include an administrative fee that the employer can collect from the employee. QuickBooks provides only three types of garnishments: Child Support, Federal Tax Levy, and Other garnishment. The garnishment types available in QuickBooks depend on the different state or federal agencies on how the garnishments are set up. To add a specific wage garnishment formula, you can consider checking other options outside of QuickBooks Online.

I am in Maryland, and I have a few employees that I have to apply wage garnishment to their paychecks.  The rule is: following are exempt from Garnishment, 1) 75% of wage 2) First $900 of the wage.  so, I have to deduct amount either 25% or income above $900 whichever is less. But QuickBooks does not let me to apply those two rules. I used to enter the paycheck and then manually edit the garnishment amount. Recently QuickBooks online does not let me to edit the garnishment manually. I need an immediate help to fix for this problem, or I have no choice but changing my payroll and accounting service provider.

I appreciate the information you've provided, @Reza46. Let's perform troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue with editing your garnishment in QuickBooks.

Before anything else, may I know if you've received an error message when editing the garnishment manually? If so, can you provide us with a screenshot for visual reference? That way, I can check if there's an ongoing investigation related to your specific scenario. Any additional information will be much appreciated so I can assist you appropriately.

In the meantime, let's run the payroll and edit the garnishment in a private browser to check for any data issues in your browser.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts to save you time:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

If it works fine, I'd suggest clearing the cache of your main browser to eliminate any outdated files or data that cause system issues and glitches. Otherwise, you can use another supported browser.
