Question

I overpaid an employee on direct deposit tonight. Can I stop that transfer before it goes to her bank?

Let me give you some insights about modifying a direct deposit paycheck, @wellsjoewells.

If the transaction is not yet processed, void the direct deposit, and send it to us to cancel the initial submission. Once done, create another paycheck to correct the amount. Then, send the payroll once again.

Also, processing will commence right after 5 PM PST, a day or two banking days before the paycheck date. If it's already beyond the cutoff time, you can no longer stop the paycheck. You'll want to apply the correction in the next paycheck instead. This way, it will offset the overpayment made in the last payout.

You can create a deduction payroll item to denote the overpaid amount. I can guide you on how.

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and then Employees.
  2. Double-click on the employees name.
  3. Select the Pencil Icon beside Pay.
  4. Scroll down to the Does [employee’s name] have any deductions? Section.
  5. Click the Add deductions link.
  6. Pick Deduction from the drop-down menu.
  7. From the Deduction/contribution drop-down, select New deduction/contribution.
  8. Enter the deduction details.
  9. Hit Ok.
