Question

I paid $225 in state tax via remittance on my own for a payroll I never ran in Dec. The state tax box on the W2 needs to be increased by $225. How do I do this manually?

Instead of paying just $225 for Nov state tax, I paid $450 thinking I was going to pay myself a salary in December, just like the rest of the year.  I ended up not running a December payroll so I've paid too much in taxes to the State.  I need to increase my W2 amount for State Tax only so it reconciles with what the State shows.  How do I enter this manually in QB Online.  I've tried to do a Journal Entry but the dollars won't flow back to the W2.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

I know the right support team who can help you correct the amount in your W-2 form, Brant.

Creating a journal entry to settle and match what your state tax shows doesn’t impact the tax form. I recommend reaching out to our payroll support for assistance in correcting the state tax amount on your W-2. They can provide specific guidance on how to manually adjust the form to reflect the overpayment.

Here are the steps to get in touch with our representatives:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Go to the Help (?) menu.
  3. Select the Search tab, then click Contact Us.
  4. Type in “Correct W-2” in the field, then hit Continue.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat
    • Callback

If you need a copy of your form, you can use this guide as a reference on how to generate and print it successfully in the program: Print your W-2 and W-3 forms.

Please don’t hesitate to get back on this thread and leave a message if you have any other payroll needs. I'm always here to help, Brant.

Hi Madelyn,

I called QB and the lady didn't know how to help me and told me to call back to find another person to ask.  Terrible service so I'm a bit frustrated and do not know where to take this because I have little faith in the Help Desk.  Thoughts?
