Question

I submitted my 1099 through quickbook's efile. I found an error in one of the contractor's ss#, how do i get a copy of the 1096 to send to the IRS for the correction?

I understand that since I e-filed I don't have to submit a 1096. My issue is that now that I have to submit a correction it looks like I have to include a copy of the 1096 with the corrected 1099 form that I mail in to the IRS.
How do I get access to that 1096 if I didn't have to submit one to begin with?

Hi Jess PG!

You're correct. You don't need 1096 if you electronically your 1099s but you can still get 1096. Let me help you.

QuickBooks Online gives us an option to print 1096. Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and select Contractors.
  2. Click the Prepare 1099, then Let’s get started or Continue your 1099s.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps until you're in step 5, File.
  4. Select Print and mail. On the Print 1099s page, select 1096.
  5. Follow the instruction to print it.
