Question

I turned off automate taxes, so why is QB still auto withdrawing 941s to the IRS? I paid them manually already on EFTPS. Can anyone tell me how to stop QB doing that?

I'm here to share some information on how to turn off automatic tax payments and form filings, @t-helekahi.

You can go to your Payroll Settings to turn off automatic tax payments and form filings.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Gear icon () and select Payroll Settings.
  2. In the Taxes and forms section, clear the Automate taxes and forms checkbox.
  3. Click on Save.

Refer to this article for more information about turning off automatic tax payments and form filings: Manage automatic tax payments and form filings.

If you are already done performing these steps and still your taxes are filed and paid automatically, then I suggest reaching out to our Customer Support team. They can isolate this issue that you're having and help you in resolving it.

I have has QBO set to auto-file and -pay for payroll taxes.  I switched to a new accounting system on 12-31-22 but still had to process a few payrolls through QBO and my new system.  I want to turn off the auto-file and -pay, but it seems like QBO will still file and pay Q1.  I don't want that to happen because my new accounting system will be used for filing the complete quarter.  Is there a way to stop the filing and payment from happening?

There's no option to stop the automated tax payments and filing for this current quarter, cameron. Let me share additional details about this option.

Since today is already part of the first quarter, QuickBooks Online (QBO) will still handle this quarter even if you turn off the Automate taxes and forms feature now. If you turn it off, you can only file and pay your taxes starting April 1.

Here's how you can turn this feature off:

  1. Go to the Settings ⚙ icon, then click Payroll Settings.
  2. Tap Edit ✎ in the Taxes and forms section
  3. Untick the Automate taxes and forms checkbox.
  4. Select how you plan to make your tax payments and filings, and click Save.

You can visit this article for more details about this process: Manage automatic tax payments and form filings.

Also,  you can always reach out to our Payroll Support Team in case you need further assistance with changes in your filing process.
