Hello, backstagedanceco.

It’s very important that you must have the correct SUI tax liability in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, let’s check if you have the correct SUI rate in Payroll Settings.

Here’s how to check:

  1. Click on the Gear icon and choose Payroll Settings.
  2. In the Taxes section, select State Taxes – [state abbreviation].
  3. In the State Unemployment section, verify if the rate is correct

If the rate is incorrect, you’ll need to update it to the correct one so QBO will automatically calculate adjustments. Otherwise, if it’s correct, it could be that you have employees that are exempt from SUI. To check, you can follow these steps:

  1. On the left navigation bar, click on Employees.
  2. Select the employee’s name.
  3. Tap the pencil icon next to Pay (see the second screenshot below).
  4. Press the pencil icon under What are (Employee name) withholdings?.
  5. Click on Tax exemptions to expand, and verify if the employee is exempt from SUI

If there are no employees that are exempt, I would suggest contacting our payroll support. They have extra tools to check where the problem is coming from, and help you make the necessary adjustments to correct the liability.
