When the record tax payment option is used, by adding pymt, entering in the tax type, qtrly period, amt paid, then hitting the submit payment button, where does the payment get posted to on the balance sheet?

Recording a tax payment made outside of QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP) depends on whether you've already entered your liability or created paychecks, debswims. I'll give you more information and assist you in completing the process.

When you use the record tax payment option to track the payroll tax payment made outside of QBOP, it'll be posted under the liability account on your balance sheet. If you've already documented your liability or added paychecks, follow these steps to enter prior tax payments:

  1. Go to Taxes, then Payroll Tax.
  2. Select the Payments tab.
  3. Review the payments listed and locate the tax you want to record a payment for.
  4. If the payment is listed, click the ▼ dropdown and choose the option Mark as paid. Then select Yes, mark paid.

If the payment isn't listed in the Payroll Tax Center's Payments tab, please see this article to guide you on how to log your transaction: Record tax payments made outside of QuickBooks Online Payroll.

On the other hand, if you haven't generated paychecks or monitored your liabilities in QBOP, you can document your previous tax history using journal entries. For a detailed guide on how to do this, you can refer to this article: Manually enter payroll paychecks in QuickBooks Online.

Additionally, there are several payroll reports you can use to view valuable information about your business finances and employees. If you want a guide on how to run, print, and customize them, please see this article: Payroll reports in QuickBooks Online Payroll.
