Question

If I suspend payroll will quarterly tax returns still be generated?

I would like to suspend my subscription and stop payroll for several months, but I will still need to file the federal and state quarterly tax returns that QuickBooks generates for me.  Will I still be able to approve and send those returns electronically through the website?  The first quarter is usually not available until early to mid-April.  Or can I file them now since I won't have any more payroll for the first quarter of this year?  If you could explain the process I'd be so grateful.

You'll no longer access your tax forms without payroll subscription, BusinessFix. I'll provide information about filing quarterly tax returns in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When you suspend your QuickBooks Payroll subscription, aside from the fact that you'll no longer run payroll, you cannot generate future tax forms within QBO.

On the other hand, you're still unable to file your quarterly forms now. That said, I suggest waiting for the filing period of the first quarter before suspending your subscription.

Otherwise, you'll want to manually fill out the form instead. To do so, you can use the Payroll tax and wage summary report, and export it to Excel for your reference. This report displays the total subject wages, excess wages, and taxable wages by tax type.

Furthermore, check out this article to learn more about filing your tax forms in QBO: Pay and file payroll taxes and forms in Online Payroll.

On top of that, you can pull up a variety of payroll reports in QuickBooks. This will give you a closer look at your employee's total wages, deductions, and tax information for a certain period: Run payroll reports.

Thank you for the detailed reply.  You state that I am unable to file my quarterly forms now, but after looking at the filing page on the website, while it says it is "not due yet", it seems as if I can file now, there is a button for it.  I am not planning to run anymore payroll and have paid all the taxes associated with the payroll that has run so far this year.

Is there any reason why I wouldn't file now?
