If you add payroll to an existing business, does QuickBooks register you with the Federal and State to pay your payroll taxes?

Hi there, scott185.

I'll add a bunch of important details about the e-pay and e-file enrollment in QuickBooks.

Regardless of where or how you e-pay your 940 and 941/944, you need to enroll in the EFTPS prior to e-paying. If you have submitted payments to EFTPS before, you don't have to enroll again.

If not, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙️ and select Payroll Settings.
  2. In Taxes, select E-file and E-pay.
  3. In the E-pay and E-file Setup page, select E-file and e-pay (recommended).
  4. Select Federal taxes and your state.
    • If your state isn't showing from the list, see Electronic services offered by states to check if we this function for your state.
    • If you need to enroll an additional state later on, go back to this page and select the new state.
  5. If you haven't connected your bank account yet, enter the bank account info to proceed with the connection.
  6. Click E-sign to sign your documents. You can choose to print and sign the documents but make sure to contact us to send them.
  7. If you select E-sign, you'll go through a series of questions to complete and pass.

We'll proceed with the enrollment once the authorization forms have been received and the bank information has been validated. When your payroll account is ready for E-File & Pay, you'll get an email notification. Note that each state has its own enrollment lead time.

I’m adding some links below for additional resources. These articles provide information on how QBO handles the e- filing of tax forms and paying of taxes. You’ll also find answers to frequently asked questions about the feature.

Stay in touch if you have clarifications about the e-pay process and other payroll concerns. I’ll be glad to answer them for you. Have a great rest of your day.
