It is important to choose the correct filing status that's right for you because this can affect the amount of tax you owe. For married filing jointly, this may get you the highest standard deduction and a lower tax bill. You might also qualify for benefits not available to married couples filing separate tax returns. 

On the other hand, you can choose married filing separately if both of you are owing less tax. This is also beneficial if you want to separate your tax liability from your spouse's. However, this status means you pay more tax and miss out on a number of tax breaks. As per the IRS guidelines, if an employer does not have a completed Form W-4 from an employee, withhold their tax as single with no withholding allowances.
