The system had switched to "write check" only the selecting Direct Deposit simply says something unexpected happened.  I wonder if this is related to the Microsoft "global outage"

Hello, @fsleeper. I'll provide some information about the Payroll services outage in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The outage issue with Payroll services has already been resolved. Since you're unable to access the direct deposit feature, I suggest contacting our Customer Care Support Team to further investigate what's causing this issue.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click the Help (?) icon and choose a way to connect with us:

  • Start a chat with a QBO expert.
  • Get a callback from the next available support.

For future updates of QuickBooks outages, I'd recommend subscribing to this link: https://status.quickbooks.intuit.com/

Additionally, to smoothly track and manage your payroll data in QBO, check out this guide: Run payroll reports.

If you have further questions or concerns about accessing payroll features in QuickBooks, please add them in the comments below. We're always available to help. Have a good one.

I think it may have to do with the banks.  I believe that the number of banks that suddenly decided that a scheduled maintenance notice, posted mid day Friday would fool us, and were in fact under attack and closed down their servers. Maintenance always occurs on a Sunday night around 1:00 a.m.

Login to the bank unless it's not your account.
