Question

Is there a way to enter a different effective date for a state tax than the one that is provided in the drop down menu?

Today is Jan 1. The effective date for paid family and medical leave is today, but the only option I have in the drop down menu is April 1. Is there a way to change the effective date to match the notice from the state?

Hi there, nwwaterpoloclub.

You can change the effective date for your state tax by going to the Payroll settings on your QuickBooks Online account so you can match the notice from the state.

To do this, here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Payroll settings.
  3. Next to the state you want to update, select Edit ✎.
  4. In the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Setup section, select Change or add new rate.
  5. Enter the effective date.
  6. Select or enter any updated surcharge or assessment rates.
  7. Click OK.

However, if you can't enter a different effective date, I recommend contacting our Payroll support team. They have the tools to pull up your account in a secure environment and help you update the effective date.

To reach them, click the ? Help button at the top-right corner and select Contact Us to talk with a live agent. Ensure to review their support hours to know when agents are available.
