Most recent change to the hourly rate having a cap.

Is anyone else running into the issue with weekly hours being capped at 168 hours?  While I understand there are only 168 hours in a week, we have to pay our employees by the mile and it is not preventing us from processing their payroll due to the caps placed by Intuit.

I understand how frustrating it can be when payroll hours are capped! It's essential to have the flexibility to run payroll without any limitations. I have a workaround for you.

 

We'll have to assume that you'll be running the 168 hours for your employee which isn't possible and will give an error in QuickBooks. To successfully process payroll, you can enter the 167 hours under the Total hours and manually calculate the remaining 1 hour under Commission. Please know that the hourly rate of this employee is $10.

 

Once you preview payroll, provide a note under the Memo tab that the 1 hour was added under the Commission. 

 

After that, submit payroll. QuickBooks Online offers various payroll reports to help you manage your business finances and employees. For more information, refer to this article:  Run Payroll Reports.

This does not work for truck drivers - they are running 3000 miles per week, we have always paid the hours as miles meaning they are getting 3000 miles at $.50 per mile(on quickbooks it says hours). Please give us a way to change the pay type so its Per Mile or get rid of the cap.

 

Also, it is crazy to make a major change like this without notice.

    I appreciate you chiming in on the thread and posting your concern here in the Community, @defineandrea.

     

    One of the QuickBooks Online (QBO) features is you have the option to set weekly hours for your employees and pay them accordingly. However, if it seems that some of your employees have worked more than the set weekly hours limit, you can still run a payroll based on the set weekly hours and pay your employees for that amount. For the remaining hours, you can run an unscheduled payroll and pay your employees for the extra work. To accomplish that, you can follow the steps I've laid out below.

     

    1. Go to Payroll, then choose Employees.
    2. On the ▼ dropdown, select either Bonus only, Comission only, or Fringe benefits only.
    3. Based on your selection, further questions may be required. Provide information on tax or payroll calculations if necessary. Once completed, click Continue.
    4. Select the pay period and date and select the employees you want to pay.
    5. Choose the column, or click Actions ⋮ Edit Paycheck to enter payment details. You're allowed to provide hours, compensations, notes, or any pertinent information on your paycheck. Select the Review Approved Time if you are using QuickBooksTime.
    6. Tap on the Preview Payroll, then select QuickBooks bank account to track your payroll.
    7. Pick Preview payroll details, Submit payroll, or Save for later.
    8. Once done, click close.

    Yes.   This trucking company is also having to process an extra step to enter payroll due to the unit of measure called hours set to 168.   Suggestion:  program a unit of measure that companies can choose so actual units being paid can be processed in one keystroke.   Hours set at 168 can remain but there are many companies that pay employees with units of measure other than hours.

    The data input is used to create databases of overall units paid for the month, year etc.  that database is now not available for customers use.

    I appreciate the suggestion about having the ability to select a unit of measure specific to a trucking company. You may send it directly to our developers through feedback.

     

    Since the per mile in the pay type or other units of measure intended for the trucking company aside from hours is unavailable, let's create a request straight from your QuickBooks account. They can consider this for future updates depending on the number of requests.

     

    Here's how:

     

    1. Go to the Gear icon.
    2. Under the Profile column, select Feedback.
    3. Share your suggestion, then click Next.

    This is to other quickbooks company accountants using units of measure other than 'hours'.

     

    Please send a request to Quickbooks programming to add units of measure other than hours.  The more requests received will give more possibility that programming will add customer units of measure with no cap for payroll.
