Question

My business is out of my home. I am trying to set myself up as an employee. QB will not allow me to set myself up as the address for myself is the same as the business.

When I add my address an error message pops up that says something went wrong and red highlights the address box. I don't have any other address so how do you fix this?

Let's make sure to fix the error that you're getting, jamie-boxerman-g.Normally, you should be able to set up yourself as an employee with the same address as your business. You'll just have to make sure that you're providing the correct US address so you'll not encounter any errors. To update the employee information, you can follow the steps below:
  1. Open QuickBooks Online and go to Payroll.
  2. Select Employees, then Add an employee.
  3. If you want the employee to add some of their own info, enter the following in the Personal Info section:
  4. Enter the info in each section, then select Done.

If you've already provided a US address, and yet you're still getting the error, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue. There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed page resources that may cause some unusual responses. To isolate this, you can log into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account in a private window (incognito). Here's how:
  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox).
  • Control Option (Safari).

Once signed in, double-check if you're still getting the error. If you're able to successfully set up your information as an employee, return to your default browser clear your browser's cache to speed up the loading process. Every so often the cache becomes overwhelmed with older data which can potentially cause viewing and performance issues. Clearing it will refresh the system, and you'll be able to work with a clean slate. However, if the issue persists, try using other supported browsers.

Also, if you have different work and residence addresses as provided on your employee profile, you'll have to determine the state tax you're responsible for. Please read this article for more information: Set Up Employees And Payroll Taxes In A New State. Additionally, I've added this article for more information about employees working at a different location: Set Up And Assign A New Work Location.

@jamie-boxerman-g

Is your business a sole proprietorship?  You can't be an employee of your sole proprietorship.  I wonder if QBO is flagging that?
