My Nebraska withholding tax ID number is giving me an invalid ID Number

I have an 8 digit number and a PIN.  I entered the 8 digit number and it says invalid.  No dashes.  Maybe it's the wrong format?  I tried it with 2 digits, a dash and then the rest, but that didn't work either.

I have the information you need to get your Nebraska withholding tax ID number set up successfully in QuickBooks, @GistEnt.

The tax ID number in Nebraska contains a 9-digit figure, similar to a social security number. Since you have less than, you'll want to add zeros to the beginning of the number to get it to work.

QuickBooks Online provides a sample format in the State tax info page to ensure users enter their tax details correctly. You can follow the given arrangement to prevent invalid error messages. See the sample below:

This reference shared several solutions once the taxpayer information is inaccurate: Fix Invalid Taxpayer Information.

Moreover, here are some resources you can read to find out which payroll taxes and forms QuickBooks Payroll pays and files on your behalf, as well as the available options to settle them:

I did try adding a zero in the front, both with a dash and without. Neither worked.  I'm at a loss.

Hello there, GistEnt! Thank you for reaching back to the Community thread. We understand how QuickBooks challenges can affect your business activities within the program. We also appreciate your troubleshooting efforts to resolve your concern.

Ensure you enter the correct state identification number when filing taxes or for payroll. It's possible that you typed in the incorrect number. Please be aware that the account numbers for state unemployment and state withholding are different. The QuickBooks system adheres to a state-specific format: NE Withholding (xx-xxxxxxx) and NE Employer Account Number is 0212345678 (xxxxxxxxxx).

I advise contacting your state's agency to confirm that you have the right set of account numbers. After it has been verified, but the system is still identifying it as an invalid ID Number, it would be best if you contact our Payroll Support Team. They have the necessary tools to investigate your account and determine the root cause of this issue.

You can read about the Payroll Tax Compliance Links to learn about tax forms, withholdings, unemployment and other tax, e-file and pay information, general state and agency information, and employer registration.
