New hire didn't work out... wants his pay NOW.

Hi, we hired a new employee this morning who didn't work out. He worked 3 hours and we fired him, he is demanding his paycheck now, instead of waiting until I do the payroll on Monday. Our state says you have to pay within 72 hours, can I just cut him a check and pay the liabilities with next week's payroll? I am assuming I need to date his paycheck with today's check, but I have already paid the liabilities for this week. Just wondering the best way to handle this.  Thanks

Welcome to the Community, @Beadpookie. I'm here to further assist you with running payroll for your employee. This way, you can keep your payroll data updated.

You'll have to create an Unscheduled Payroll to pay your employees a final paycheck. This is applicable when you need to issue a paycheck outside of your regular pay schedule. Then, the payroll system will automatically show the update on their account.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu.
  2. Select Pay Employees, and choose Unscheduled Payroll.
  3. Verify the Pay Period Ends date, Check Date, and Bank Account the money is drawn from.
  4. Choose the name of the employee. Then, select Open Paycheck Detail to see the employee's paycheck details. Click Save & Close to go back to the Enter Payroll Information window.
  5. When the checks are ready to be created, select Continue
  6. Review the Check/Direct Deposit printing options.
  7. Verify the amounts, and select Create Paychecks
  8. Print Paychecks and Print Pay Stubs now or later if desired.

Once done, you can run the Payroll Summary report to view your employee's total wages, deductions, contributions, and taxes. Go to the Reports menu and select the Employees & Payroll option.

If you have payroll liabilities that you need to pay regularly, you can pay your liabilities for this employee when you create the next payment schedule.
