would running an off cycle payroll in Q4 for pay period Q1 require filing a 941 for Q1 ?  This would be the first time running payroll for a one person s-corp.

Hi, @1209382.

Yes, it'll still require you to file a 941 for Quarter 1 once you run an off-cycle payroll in Quarter 4.

To create an unscheduled check, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. In the left menu, click Workers or Payroll menu.
  2. Go to the Employees tab.
  3. Hit Run payroll.
  4. Locate the employee you want to pay, and then select Create another check.
  5. Enter employee compensation, including any salary adjustments, vacation or sick hours, and other pay types.
  6. Confirm the pay period and check date.
  7. Choose Preview Payroll, and then pick Submit payroll.
  8. If creating a paper check, handwrite or print the check and give it to the employee by the check date.
  9. Pick Finish payroll.

how does the Cares act affect the requirement to file 941 from an off cycle payroll?

would there be penalties for filing a Q1 941 in Q4, specifically this year relating to the cares act.

Does Quickbooks Payroll file off cycle 941 automatically?

Hi there, wl8fjsa4f.

QuickBooks will automatically file tax forms if you're subscribed to Full Service Payroll (Core, Premium, and Elite). You can see more details about this here: Tax Payments And Forms Intuit Payroll Submits For You.

If you're using the do-it-yourself type of subscription (Enhanced or Self Service Payroll), you'll need to manually file the form. Just follow the steps in this article on how to process the form: Pay And File Payroll Taxes Online.

You can follow these steps on how to check what subscription you're using:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Proceed to the Billing and Subscription tab.
  3. Look for the payroll section to see the details.

I would also recommend reaching out to the IRS with regards to your question about the requirement to file a Form 941 for an off cycle payroll. They can also give you the information you need with regards to your question about penalties.
