When a salaried employee has worked less hours than allotted in a pay period and doesn't have sick/vacation hours to cover the difference, you can pay them for their hours worked by editing their salary rate. This enables you to pay a partial or prorated salary amount.

A common method for determining a salaried employee's hourly rate is to take their annual salary and divide it by their total hours worked in a standard year, based on 40 hours per week. You'll then be able to multiply the hourly rate by their hours worked in the particular period.

Here's how it's done:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Employees, then Payroll Center.
  2. Access the Pay Employees tab.
  3. Under Create Paychecks, choose a Payroll Schedule and click Start Scheduled Payroll.
  4. Confirm each employee you're paying has check marks.
  5. Select the name of any employees that have a partial payment for this period to open their paycheck's details.

  6. Locate your salary item under their Earnings table and highlight its amount under the Rate column.
  7. Enter their rate for this period based upon hours worked.
  8. Press the Tab key on your keyboard to recalculate taxes, then review their check and make any necessary adjustments.
  9. Select Save and Close.
