Payroll journal entries

Hi,

I'm a very small business.  I have one employee, my husband.  At the end of every quarter, I end up screwing up and not recording the last payroll check of the quarter.  I don't record everything thing daily, more like monthly (or worse)  Every time it's such a hassle because I keep getting an error saying 'you may owe penalties' when I'm trying to do the quarterly payroll tax, and it won't let me enter in the check from the month before.  I have to call and wait for an 'expert' to do it for me.  Has anyone found a way around this?  Other than staying on top of my bookkeeping?  🙂  Thanks!

Good day, Kmbrlee.

You can enter payroll history for the current year. But only if no paycheck has yet been issued. Since you already have paychecks created, you can contact our payroll support to add historical payroll data to QuickBooks Online for payroll.

As an alternative, you can manually enter payroll checks by creating a journal entry. Refer to this article to guide you through the process: Manually enter payroll paychecks in QuickBooks Online.

An understanding of debits and credits is necessary for journal entries. Speak with your accountant or find a ProAdvisor if you have specific questions about your chart of accounts.

Additionally, you can periodically run your payroll reports to get a quick overview of the transactions you've already created. You can use the following resource as a reference and to learn more about how to use each report in the program: Run payroll reports in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

If you have any other concerns or additional questions about QuickBooks payroll. I'm always here to help. Take care and stay safe.
