Quickbooks Payroll re-entering payroll key

Our company moved to a PEO for payroll and benefits beginning on 12/1/24.  I need QBs to continue to do job costing for hours worked (time keeping done in QB Time and Intuit Field Service Manager).  I finally was able to change preferences to manual payroll and then removed the payroll key.  However, now I have no payroll history.  I'm trying to reinstall the payroll key, but it is taking much longer than I think it should.  Like 45 minutes and still "Updating paychecks..."

Should I force it to close or keep it updating?

Thanks for getting in touch with the Community, Jody-Bryant. I appreciate your detailed information.

Initially, you'll want to make sure you're using the correct Payroll Service Key. You can confirm it from the email you received with it. If you don't have it, I'd recommend using our automated Service Key Retrieval tool. To use this utility, you'll need to sign in with your Intuit Account first.

In the event you're unable to retrieve your service key using the tool, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team.

The automated tool may not work if:

  • You purchased the payroll product from a retail store.
  • There's multiple payroll orders in Intuit's system for your company.
  • The business phone number you've provided didn't match what Intuit has on file.

Once you have the appropriate Payroll Service Key, it can be entered.

Here's how to enter it if you don't have a payroll service in your company file:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Employees.
  2. Hover your cursor over Payroll, then go to Enter Payroll Service Key.
  3. If no payroll service is listed, select Add.

Here's how to enter it if you have a payroll service in the company file:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Employees.
  2. Move the cursor over My Payroll Service.
  3. Click Manage Payroll Service.
  4. If a payroll service is listed, select Edit.

You can remove your Payroll Service Key if needed, hit Next, then when the Payroll Update message appears, press OK. Afterwards, verify your Service Status shows ACTIVE and select OK.

In the event QuickBooks advises you need to perform an update, and the update appears to be taking much longer than it should, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.
