Question

QuickBooks updated our unemployment incorrectly and it now shows an overpayment that doesn't exist in "action needed" in the payroll tax center. How do I remove it?

Thanks for reaching out to us, @userdestiny. While QuickBooks may make changes to your unemployment rate, rest assured that you can always update it in the payroll section and I'd be glad to show you how.

Updating your State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rate correctly is important to keep your tax liability accurate and to avoid overpayments. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Click the Gear icon , then select Payroll settings.
  3. Next to the state you want to update, select Edit ✎.
  4. In the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Setup section, select Change or add new rate.
  5. Enter your new rate and its effective date.
  6. Select or enter any updated surcharge or assessment rates.
  7. Select OK.

You can check out this article for the complete guidelines I shared: Update your State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rate in QuickBooks or Intuit Payroll.

Moreover, I've added this resource in case you need to fix overpaid taxes in QuickBooks Payroll: Resolve a payroll tax overpayment.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, let me know in the comments below. I'll be happy to help.

I don't need to update the unemployment rate, it is correct. When the adjustment was made, they incorrectly added a very large overpayment that doesn't actually exist. I cannot apply this overpayment to future returns as it is a fictitious overpayment created in QuickBooks. We never actually overpaid. But it continues to show this overpayment and prevents me from properly closing out my returns.
