If an employee left the organization and is now re-hired, do I enter them as a whole new person, or can the original termination date be cancelled like they never left?

It's best to use the original employee so you don't have two employee records for one person, which can lead to various issues.

To start paying them again, remove the termination date and change any other status fields as needed.

Hi there, @Helicopter1.

I'd be pleased to help you reinstate a terminated employee.

The following steps will guide you on how you can get your employee active and back on payroll:

  1. Go to Employees in the menu bar at the top, then to Employee Center.
  2. Choose the employee and open their profile.
  3. In the Edit Employee window, remove the checkmark from Employee is Inactive.
  4. Select the Employment Information menu and select the Termination tab.
  5. Remove all the termination details.
  6. Select Ok to save the updated information.

Once done, you can pay your employee right away. You can get more details about modifying an employee's status in this article: Terminate or change your employee's status on payroll.

Anytime you have questions about employees and payroll, or anything in QuickBooks, you can post them here and I'd be happy to answer. Have a good one!
