Running a W2 before the end of the year

Hello,

 

I am wondering if there is a way to go ahead and run the 2022 W2 now (in October) for an employee who will not be receiving any further paychecks this year? Or is that only possible to do after the Jan 1 2023?

Unfortunately, you can't.  The 2022 W-2 is available from the IRS so I'm unsure why they don't allow you to process it.  If it's any consolation, we use a local payroll service and they say they can't run them before year-end either - and they process payroll for many thousands of employees.  They probably know something I don't.
