Question

Should I change an employee's status to Unpaid Leave of Absence if he is gone for an entire month and should not be paid?

The employee requested time off for an entire month without pay.  How do we stop his payroll check without terminating him?

Glad to have you here in the Community, @tpg-partners_controller.

Yes, you'll have to change the status of the employee to Unpaid Leave of Absence if he won't work for a month. This way, QuickBooks won't include the employee on the list when creating a paycheck. To change the employee status, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.
  2. Click Payroll from the left menu, then select Employees.
  3. Select the employee you want to change the status.
  4. Go to the Employment details section, then select Edit.
  5. From the Status drop-down, choose Unpaid Leave of Absence.
  6. Click Save.

I'm adding this article for more guidance: Terminate or change your employee's status on payroll.

You may also want to run payroll reports in QuickBooks. This will help you view useful information about your business and employees.
