Should the 2024 State Disability Insurance (SDI) rate for California be automatically updated in Quickbooks payroll online (I do not see an option to update n settings)?

Hello there! I would be happy to help you manually update your State Disability Insurance (SDI) rate for California in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Iponcia.

We are unable to automatically update your State Disability Insurance (SDI) since you will have to contact California Employment Development to know what specific rate you can use for your payroll.

However, we can manually update your SDI rate for California in QBO by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your QBO account.
  2. Navigate to the Payroll settings.
  3. Select the State and subsequently click on the Edit/Pencil icon.
  4. After that, hit on the State Disability Insurance tab.
  5. Click on the Modify or Add option.
  6. Enter the revised SDI rate and any updated information.
  7. The tax rates can be changed by adjusting the Surcharge or Assessment tax rates.
  8. Upon making the required changes, click on OK.

I'll include this helpful resource for more information on this process: Set up employees and payroll taxes in a new state.

For future reference, if you want to learn how to pay and file your 941, 944, 943, 940, state, and local taxes using QuickBooks e-pay and e-file, feel free to refer to this informative article: Pay and file payroll taxes and forms electronically in QuickBooks Online Payroll

Following your instructions, I click on state, edit, there is no SDI tab. It shows UI, ETT but nothing for SDI.

The system will automatically update the State Disability Insurance (SDI) rate for you, Iponcia. I'll share further details about this.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) will recalculate and update the SDI rate to catch up on your employee's next paychecks according to the rate specified by your state. This is the reason you're unable to see the option to edit it in your Payroll Settings. I recommend waiting until the system updates it.

In case you need further verification as to when the SDI rate will be updated, you can get in touch with our Payroll support team.

I also recommend visiting our Payroll Compliance Blog page to keep you updated about the changes in your payroll taxes and payroll compliance per state.

Drop a comment below if you have other concerns regarding your payroll item rates. I'm just around the corner to provide guidance. Have a good one.
