Question

So, Quickbooks Online Payroll has failed to file a required withholding tax return with my state and I cannot get them to call me to straighten this out. Help.

Thanks for reaching out, @sfog.

In QuickBooks Online Payroll Core, Premium, and Elite, you have the option to choose if you want Intuit to file and process your tax payments automatically.

To isolate the issue of why the system failed to file the required withholding tax return, let's check your settings if you've turned on automatic tax payments and form filings. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Payroll Settings
  3. In the Taxes and forms section, click Edit ✎.
  4. Put a checkmark on the Automate taxes and forms checkbox.
  5. Choose Save.

If the Automate taxes and forms checkbox isn't marked, that's why the system failed to file the required withholding tax return.

To learn more about this feature, see this article: Manage automatic tax payments and form filings.
