Question

Trying to pay our EFTPS today, Quickbooks indicated my password was too long (8-12 character limit). This is new this payroll. EFTPS says 12-30 PW. So it has to be 12?

Yes, you're right, CR admin.

The IRS is imposing new password requirements for those paying federal taxes electronically. They require a 13-month password expiration policy and must be 12-30 characters.

Here are the following EFTPS password guidelines:

  • Have at least one uppercase letter.
  • Have at least one lowercase letter.
  • Have at least one number.
  • One of the following characters ( ! , @, #, $, *, +, - ).
  • No double characters (no consecutive characters can be the same)
  • It must not be the same as any of the five previous passwords used.

You may consider updating your password now so you'll be able to pay your taxes successfully. You can go to this website: https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/login/loginInitial.

If you have any other QuickBooks related concerns, please know that you can always post them here and I'll make sure to help you out.

Yes, this happened in late 2019.

My question is... I changed my password in October, and every payroll has worked, paying it through Quickbooks, until today.  Today when I paid, Quickbooks told me my password was too long.  I have not had this problem before today, and I haven't made any changes since October.

So the only way I can e-pay through Quickbooks is if my password is EXACTLY 12 characters?

It seems the Quickbooks e-payment system requirement of 8-12 characters for EFTPS should be updated to match the actual EFTPS requirement of 12-30?  I don't understand why they are different?

Hey there, @CR admin. Thanks for providing an update.

I'm here to provide some insight into the IRS EFTPS password requirement issue you're running into. We rolled out a payroll update shortly after the change was made to conform with the new policy. I recommend downloading the newest update and trying it again. It's super easy to do. Check it out:

  1. Go to the Employees menu, then Get Payroll Updates.
  2. Tick the Download Entire Update checkbox, then hit Download Latest Update. A window appears when the download is complete.

That's it! You'll also want to make sure the QuickBooks Desktop application is up-to-date. That's super easy, as well. Check it out here: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release

Please touch base with us here if there's anything else you need, I'm determined to ensure your success. Have an awesome day.

with the new 2021 version the chat head told me it was now required to be 14

The program should tell you this and not let you enter it if its not enough

I had the same issue.  Following QB`s instruction through the chat, I changed my EFTPS password; I followed the EFTPS requirements.  However,  the EFTPS password format is different from the QB format.  The chat consultant told me to pick a different password that is QB compliant.  They said I could only have 1 special character and only 12 digits for it to work.  I tried  to change the EFTPS password,  I now have to wait 10 more days to reset that password.  Meanwhile, my filings are due.  I am concerned that i am going to have to file manually.

This is not the impression we want you to experience when processing your tax payments, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE.

I appreciate the time and effort you've spent in contacting our chat support agent to reset your EFTPS password. IRS is implementing new password requirements for making federal tax payments electronically. E-Pay gets rejected if the internet password is not updated or it doesn't comply with the new pin specifications. For more details about this one, see the How do I get/replace/change my Internet password? article.

Since you have to wait for 10 days to reset the password, we can create a printed liability check to pay the taxes. We can also contact IRS to see if there are other option to pay the taxes on time. For additional reference, check out the Check E-file or E-pay Status article to check the payment or form you submitted in QuickBooks.

In some instances, you may experience issues when you try to e-file or e-pay with the IRS through QuickBooks Desktop, refer to these articles to troubleshoot the problem:
