Let me help you sort this out, @400334.

May I ask what error prompt did you received while trying to enter your NE State Identification number

Here are the instances why you're unable to enter your State ID number in QuickBooks Online.

  • Incorrect number format
    • Ensure to use the correct number format specifically for NE Withholding which is  12-3456789 (xx-xxxxxxx). While for NE Employer Account Number which is 0212345678 (xxxxxxxxxx).
  • Incorrect account number
    • Verify if you have the correct NE Withholding number and NE Employer Account Number. You may reach out to your State agency to make sure you have the correct set of account numbers.

  • To ensure this is not browser related, let’s apply the following troubleshooting steps:
    • Access and setup your QuickBooks Online payroll using an incognito or private browser. Use either of the following shortcut keys:
      • Google Chrome, press CTRL  + Shift + N
      • Mozilla Firefox: press CTRL  + Shift + P
      • Internet Explorer: press CTRL  + Shift + P
      • Safari: press Command + Shift + N
    • If you're able to enter your employer account number successfully, you may want to clear your browser's history
    • To check any issues with your browser's health and its compatibility with QuickBooks Online, you can also use the Browser Health Checkup Tool.

That should do it! Feel free to click the Reply button if you have follow-up questions about setting up your State Payroll tax. I’m always here to help.

I'm having the same problem trying to enter my Nebraska State ID Number.  It wants it in a xx-xxxxxxx format, but my number (looking on the certificate) is only 8 digits and no dashes.  Help please!

Thank you for posting here in the Community, @jodisd1.

To ensure that you have the correct NE Withholding number, I highly suggest reaching out to your State agency for verification. It should be with a format of xx-xxxxxxx for the NE Withholding and xxxxxxxxxx for the NE Employer Account Number. You can follow the steps provided by, IamjuViel to verify your account numbers.

Also, I'd attached here a helpful article that you can read through to know more about what's changing with the federal W-4

Feel free to leave a reply below if you have other concerns with QuickBooks. I'll appreciate the opportunity to help. Stay safe and take care always.

I’m trying to set up my taxes as well for payroll. I’m in Texas and when I tried to register, I was told I was not liable to pay state taxes. Therefore I was not goven a number. I’ve typed in my FEIN where it asks but I still haven’t been able to set it up.

I am also having all these problems. Anybody come up with an answer?

Hi there, aztek_llc.

Welcome and Thank you for posting here in QuickBooks Community.

When you enter the state identification number for payroll or taxes, make sure to input the correct one. That said, it could be that you entered the wrong number. This is because State unemployment and State withholding have different account numbers. The format that the QuickBooks system follows is all from the state. That said, numbers should be with a format of xx-xxxxxxx for the NE Withholding and xxxxxxxxxx for the NE Employer Account Number.

I still suggest contacting your state agency to make sure that you have the correct set of account numbers and verify from them.

Once verified, you can click this article to see detailed steps on how to add or edit your state account number: Changing a state account number.

Please refer to this to see different information about the new changes to the Federal W-4 and how to enter and print a W-4 for employees: What’s changing with the Federal W-4?.

Please let me know if you hit any bumps along the way so I can assist you further. Always take care and have a nice day!

I had the same issue and called the NE Dept of Revenue. They said to add the 21- to the beginning of the number and then a leading zero to my 8 digit number, that worked.

Example -

Your Ne tax ID - 12345678

Enter into QB as - 21-[removed]
