Question

Very serious bug - MA - Withholdings are zeros

In this year's Payroll Liability Report, MA - Withholdings are all zeros (from Jan to the present) while all other numbers (e.g., Federal Withholding, Medicare, Social Security, MA unemployment...) look flawless.

However, the payroll summary report looks flawless and the Transactions by Payroll Item for MA-Withholding also looks flawless. Only the liability has been messed up.

I am filing the Q2 tax now. This is really frustrating. It used to work perfectly.

Could anyone offer a tip on how to remedy this?

I am using QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020. I believe it has the latest update.

I think the report is filtered on liability-type accounts.

Does MA - Withholding use your standard payroll liability account, or another liability account?

Thank you for lending a hand here. I am sorry but I don't know the difference. It worked flawlessly for quite a few years.

Here is how I found out. First, I used "Pay Payroll Liabilities" to pay $x for MA-Withholding for Q2. Later, I realized the amount should be $y which is 6x higher than $x.  $x is actually only for a month. Let me emphasize again that all other items are correct.

BTW, I closed and restarted QB a few times to no avail.

I'm chiming in to share some details about about your concern, @hz10.

The possible reason your withholding shows zero is that you've made changes to your employees' accounts. Changes in your employees' accounts, know that it can affect the MA- withholding setup. You'll also want to check how QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) calculates your state income tax.

For more information about how QBDT calculate your state income tax, feel free to visit this article: Understand how QuickBooks Desktop calculates your payroll taxes.

In case you've made no changes to your employees' accounts, you'll want to reach out to our QuickBooks Desktop Support team. This way, they'll be able to check on your account and determine the root cause of the issue. Refer to this article for further guidance:  Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.
