when does the 2024 payroll update come out to be able to print current year W2s and 1099's?

    I appreciate you connecting, @higginscrabs. I'll provide details regarding W2 and 1099 inside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

     

    For QBDT Payroll Assisted users, please note that they can view and print W-2 forms starting on January 10. Also, if you're using the Payroll Enhanced or Standard version, the forms will be available for printing on January 1.     That article includes the text:

    "Buy W-2 paper if you’re printing from QuickBooks and mailing official copies to your employees. We recommend ordering W-2 kits (W-2s and envelopes) through us to make sure the W-2s print correctly. "

     

    This is bad advice. There is no reason at all to buy W-2 forms, which are not required. QuickBooks will print W-2's on plain paper, both for your employees and for filing with the SSA - if you don't file electronically.  Red drop-out ink forms are not required.

     

    Not only is printing on plain paper much, much cheaper than buying forms, it is much easier because no alignment is required - because the entire form and data prints.
