Question

What payment type should be used for employees that are not paid hourly? For example a rafting guide that gets paid $120 per trip?

It's great to see you here, @woody-columbiari. I can provide information on what payment type to utilize for staff who are not paid hourly.

Great news! You can set up a new +Another Other Earning type item to track your employees' pay.

To start:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.
  2. Click on Payroll at the left pane, then select Employees.
  3. Select the employee's name from the list or click on Add an employee for a fresh record.
  4. Go to the Pay types section, then select Edit.
  5. Hit on the +Another Other Earning Type link, then enter the item name.
  6. Enter the amount (optional).
  7. Tap Save to record the changes.
  8. Repeat the same steps for other employees.

After that, you can pay your employees using that item.

For more resources while setting up additional pay items in QuickBooks Online (QBO), you may open this article: Add or change pay types. The same website will instruct you on how to modify and hide/remove pay items from your workers’ paychecks.

This page also contains further advice while processing your employees' pay:  Create and run your payroll. When you're ready to submit your forms and taxes, review the resources from this article as a guide: Pay and file payroll taxes and forms in Online Payroll.
