When is the last day to add employees to the payroll for 2021?

Payroll tax returns for the 2021 annual or 4th quarter are due to be filed by January 31, 2022.  Those returns will include any wages actually paid to employees in 2021. This means that the paycheck date was in 2021, not necessarily the days worked.

You can add an employee and enter their wages paid in 2021 up until you create and file your tax returns.

If you hired an employee that worked in 2021, but their first paycheck is dated 2022, those wages would not be included in 2021 payroll reports, returns, or forms.
