Question

Why does my QB calculate, and try to require me to file Utah State taxes, when we are an Idaho business, working only in Idaho?

Also, How do you undo it, when it calculates Utah tax instead of Idaho, and says your Idaho tax due is $0?

Hi there, Nonbiz.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) calculates taxes depending on your company setup and employees. If your business is calculating and requiring you to file in a different state, you may have employees working remotely, and the system identifies this as a separate work location.

In this situation, review all employees' addresses, work locations, and other information to ensure they're on point. Otherwise, you may need to make some modifications to prevent the system from calculating incorrect state taxes. We'll gladly write down the steps:

  1. Go to Payroll, then select Employees.
  2. Select your employee.
  3. In the Employment details and review your employee's information.
  4. If you wish to make changes, select Start or Edit.
  5. When finished, select Save.

If there are no problems with your employee's details, it's best to contact our Customer Care Team so our payroll experts can dig deeper and determine the root cause of the issue. See this page for more details: Contact Payroll Support.
