Why is quickbooks basing customer tax rate off of my business address instead of servicing address?

Let me explain why QuickBooks Online (QBO) used your business address for your customer tax rate, matt.

QBO automatically calculates the total tax rate for each sale based on the following:

  • Your customer's tax-exempt status
  • Where you sell and where you ship
  • What you sell

When you set up your sales tax the first time, the business address listed under your business info in the Settings will be used by QBO as the sale location. However, you can always change the location of your transaction

If you really need to change the address, you'll need to override the sales tax on your transactions. Here's how:

  1. In your invoice or sales receipt, select See the math
  2. Select Override this amount
  3. Before entering the adjustment, read the provided options and steps. Then, enter the desired rate or amount.
  4. Choose a reason for making the change, then select Confirm
  5. Hit Save.

If you want to see the sales tax you overrode, select See the math again to see the adjustment.

Moreover, I'll add this link to help you record, adjust, and delete sales tax payments in the tax center: Manage sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.
