Question

Why won't this online version of quickbooks accept my social security number? It's correct and I"m the business owner so I can't even setup my own payroll. Not impressed

I got booted out of employee setup because it kept telling me my social security number was incorrect and now I can't log back in as an employee do to setup. It also tells me my soc number is wrong when I go in as the admin to do the setup. I've wasted a lot of time on this

Hello, carol.

I'm here to assist you in any way I can. Let's work together to overcome this roadblock and successfully enter your SS number in QuickBooks. We'll make sure everything is seamless and error-free. Have you tried opening your account using an incognito/private browser? Using a private or incognito window can occasionally cause the accumulated cache and cookies in the system can become outdated or corrupted, leading to unexpected behaviors. Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Once logged in, go to the setup and enter your employee ss number again. If it works, I recommend clearing your browser's cache. Doing so will remove the historical data and access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also switch to a different supported browser

Once successful, I'd recommend getting your worker's name and SSN for the employee's Form W-2 year-end filing. It's important to make sure that all information is accurate and up-to-date. Once you have them, you can use this link to verify your employees' Social Security numbers

Here's an article about the Year-End Checklist for QuickBooks Online Payroll for future reference.

I appreciate your quick response and providing a screenshot, carol. I see the importance of getting this sorted out promptly.

Given that you're sure about your SSN, it's still a good idea to double-check it to avoid any accidental mistakes that could cause authentication problems.

I suggest visiting the Social Security Number Verification Service website to confirm your SSN. There are situations that other users have accidentally use Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) because they have a similar format to SSNs (NNN-NN-NNN). For additional information, you can refer to this article about Social Security numbers.

If you've checked that your SSN is correct but still face the same error despite trying the troubleshooting steps from my colleague, please contact our Customer Support Team. We'll conduct a more thorough review of your account to understand the reasons behind the persistent error. This can help us provide you a timely solution.
