Hi there, y_dunlop.

Since the last payroll you’ve made was in 2016, I’d recommend updating your first pay date to a current date. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Accounts and Settings.
  3. Go to Payroll and click the pencil icon for Pay schedule.
  4. Change the date to current on your First pay date in QuickBooks.
  5. Click Save pay schedule.

This should allow you to run payroll again and add another employees.

It's possible that your Payroll subscription has expired, y_dunlop.

You can go to your Billing & Subscription tab and check its status. If it shows Expired, you may want to subscribe again.

If the status is Active, but the same thing happens, I'd suggest reaching to our Phone Agents. They'll check to see why this issue persists. Here's how to contact them:

  1. Click the ? Help icon, and then Contact Us.
  2. Enter payroll as your keyword.
  3. Click Let's talk.
  4. Select either Get a callback or Start a chat.
  5. Enter your necessary details, and then continue with the steps.

Once everything is fine, you can follow the steps provided by my colleague on how to change your payroll date.

I'm always here if there's anything else that I can help you with. Thank you.
