Solved

I have set up for MTD, have confirmation from HMRC, have set up QuickBooks. The problem is QuickBooks continually states not connected to HMRC. Does anyone know why?

Hi Wolfen can you let me know what you did step by step please to fix this as mine has the refresh now and blocked with orange exclamation mark, I disconnected from HMRC and connected again without doing anything else and not get refresh now option which then connects but get a red exclamation next to blocked. Please help guide us what to do to resolve this correctly, thanks.

Thanks for joining the thread, atki,

Let me provide information about submitting VAT return to HMRC for MTD.

Upon authorizing QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, it takes approximately 72 hours after you have opted in to MTD on HMRC's website. For the meantime, you’ll have to wait for that specific period.

Moreover, in order to submit VAT return to HMRC for MTD, make sure to follow the steps below:

To enable MTD in QuickBooks, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Click Taxes in the left navigation menu.
  2. Click on Let's go button at the upper right hand.

Once done, to authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, follow these steps:

  1. Click Continue to sign in.
  2. Enter your HMRC credentials to sign in.
  3. Click on Grant authority to continue.
  4. Once the authorisation has been given, you will receive a 'You're connected to HMRC message as below, then click Continue.
  5. When the process has been completed, click on Take a look.

That's it! Once you're able to complete this process, you can now submit VAT return for MTD through QuickBooks.

Note- Please check the date of your VAT period as you can not file before the period ends it will block you from doing that. Also please check  the VAT number is entered correctly in Quickbooks in the VAT  settings and that you have the correct gateway details for the connection. By logging into HMRC gateway with those details.

For more detailed steps, here's a great resource that you can check: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses.

I'd appreciate if you can update me on how it goes. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!

Hello burgateengineer,

Did you go through all steps needed to connect QuickBooks to HMRC? Where does it state that it is not connected?

Thanks,

Talia

Hi yes I went through all the steps correctly as far as I understand.
On the VAT page (upper right) I get an amber circled exclamation mark stating 'Refresh your VAT centre to stay connected with HMRC.'
When I click the 'Refresh Now' button I then get a red circled exclamation mark stating:
We can’t connect to HMRC right now
Let’s check a few things out to get you back on track.
When I click learn more it just lists the things I have already done.
Thanks
Matt

I have the same problem, is a fix coming? I'm do to file a VAT return in April

August 20, 2019

I had exactly this problem and tried all of the other fixes such as disconnecting then reconnecting non of which worked.

In the end, I rang Quickbooks who solved the problem in a couple of minutes.

In the Taxes section, click Edit VAT on the top right and check your VAT number does NOT have any spaces in it. If it does, remove the spaces and it will hopefully fix the connection issue.

It worked for me and I managed to submit my VAT return at long last
