Is there a way to pay someone without a national insurance number in the UK?

I have a couple of interns joining soon and one of them is a foreign student who hasn't received their National Insurance number yet.  Is there a way to still process a payroll in quickbooks?  I've spoken to HMRC and they have said it's fine to leave the NI number blank but it doesn't look like quickbooks allows this and if I put a 'fake' one in then HMRC will receive this which will cause problems their end.  Any suggestions / ideas as to how o make this work please?

I can show you how to set your employee's profile to pay them without National Insurance number in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Ian Ormerod.

You'll just have to set up your employee's profile to pay them without adding National Insurance details.

If you're using QuickBooks Online Advanced Payroll, you'll just have to click the NIN unknown box from the Enter tax and National Insurance details section when adding your employee in the account.

For detailed guidance on how to set the National Insurance details for the employee, refer to this article: Adding an employee in QuickBooks Online Advanced Payroll.

If you're using QuickBooks Online Standard Payroll, you'll just need to put NT in the Tax code and X- no NI in NI code letter. You can refer to this article for more information on how to set up or edit your employee's profile:

Once done, you can now review and submit payroll:

From here, you can submit a Full Payment Summary (FPS) to HMRC: Submit FPS (Full Payment Summary) to HMRC. That will also guide you how to check the FPS submission status from the account.

That should let you pay your employees without a national insurance number. If you still have questions or if you need further guidance, let me know in the Reply section below. Have a wonderful day!
