Payroll won't accept National Insurance category

Hi, I have a new employee, with an National Insurance category B - but he's male. Payroll won't accept it, even though he's had that category since his first job many years ago and his previous employers don't seem to have had a problem.

I have tried creating and editing an existing employee as male with the Category B for National Insurance. This did give an error message on each occasion when trying to do this due to the employee group associated being 'Married women and widows entitled to pay reduced National Insurance' I think speaking with the HMRC as you have stated is the only way you will receive clarification as we wouldn't further on this scenario.

Hello there, @Shadow1. 

 

I'm here to guide you to the right support who can help you with the National Insurance (NI) category. 

 

In QuickBooks, the NI category B- Reduce rate is set up for Females only Married/Widows. Since your employee is male, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. They will be the one to provide you the workaround on how you can select NI category B for the male employee.

 

Here's how to contact our customer support:

  1. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help from the Help menu.
  2. You can also press F1 on your keyboard to bring up the same Help Panel. 
  3. In order to route you to the correct support expert, we need to know what type of question you have.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. We’ll provide you a few options. You choose which one is best for you.

Hi, Unfortunately Quickbooks can't help so I'm going to pester HMRC. Many thanks anyway.
