Should JE be created automatically when running core payroll or do I have to create it? If so how?

Journal Entry should be automatically created when you run your QuickBooks Online payroll core, Jplewis60. I'm here to address and provide further information about your concerns.

When a Journal Entry is not automatically created, let's perform troubleshooting steps in your account by logging in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private or incognito browser.

You can use these keyboard shortcuts below:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N

From there, check if a Journal Entry is created once you run your payroll core. If it works, return to your regular browser and clear its cache. Clearing your browser's cache removed cookies that prevent web pages from loading.

Furthermore, if you want to manually create a Journal Entry in your QBO account. However, in doing so, I recommend seeking guidance from your accountant, as this affects your books in QBO. If you don't have an accountant, find one on this web page: Find a QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

Here's how:

  1. At the upper right panel, click + New.
  2. Under Others, choose Journal Entry.
  3. Select an account from the Accounts field at the beginning of this line. The amount must be entered into the right column, presuming you need to debit or credit an account.
  4. On the next line, choose another account to transfer money to or from. You can write down the same amount in the other column, depending on whether or not you have recorded your debits and credits from the first line.
  5. Review the amounts - the Credit column should have the same amount as the Debit column, indicating balanced accounts.
  6. You can also add information in the memo section to know why you made the journal entry.
  7. Once done, you can choose Save and New or Save and Close.
