When you furlough an employee, it'll be recorded depending on his/her first and last day of leave, office175. This is to track the number of days that your employee is on furlough.

Let's go to the employee's profile and change his/her status. This way, you can monitor the number of employees on furlough and record every information that's needed. Here's how:

  1. Go to Employees menu.
  2. Select the employee's name.
  3. In the employee's profile, click the Actions drop-down arrow.
  4. Choose Employee's leave.
  5. Select the Type of leave.
  6. Enter all the needed information (e.g. First day of leave, Last day of leave).
  7. Click Save.

Then, you'll have to create a pay category so you can track furlough employees. Here are the steps for QuickBooks Online Advanced Payroll:

  1. Go to the Payroll settings.
  2. Select Pay Categories, then click Add.
  3. Leave PAYE Exempt and Exempt from National Insurance unticked to ensure PAYE and NI are calculated.
  4. Go back to your employee list.
  5. Select a furloughed employee.
  6. On the left, go to Pay rates.
  7. Select your newly created category, and select Show in Pay Run.

In case you're using QuickBooks Online Standard Payroll or PaySuite, kindly refer to this article for the step-by-step guide: COVID-19: Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. It also provides information about who are eligible, how much should you pay your employees, and how do you make a claim.

To find out how to calculate your employees' wages, NICs, and pension contributions is you've furloughed staff due to COVID-19, here's an article from HMRC to guide you how: Coronavirus (COVID-19): guidance and support.

There are three payroll versions for QBO UK. Just select the payroll service you're using to view the list of resource links on how to effectively manage your payroll and employees in the program.

Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help.
