MTD Issues

I've just signed up for MTD and have received my confirmation email from HMRC. Signed in to MTS through QB, granted permissions etc. All seemed fine.

Started to do my return but after the first MTD screen I have three returns ready, all showing zero and they are all 3 previous returns and no current one to file. Which is ready with no errors.

Just to see what would happen I hit file vat with the last quarter selected but it just fires up a load of HTML code in one of the windows so looks like there's a QB issue somewhere. See attached screenshot.

I'm now stuck with no method of filing my VAT.

Please advise.

The thing is why isn't there a return for the last quarter ready to be filed?

Good day, @Mark Armistead.

A possible data issue in your company file might be the cause of this behavior.

If your company file can’t be fixed by rebuilding the data or using the File Doctor, I'd suggest contacting our phone support. This way, they can check your files and fix the error.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Write your concerns in the description box, then select Continue.
  4. Select which one of the support options you'd like to use.

Please check out our support hours to ensure that we address your concerns on time.

The Community always has your back, so please let me know if you have any other questions. I'll be more than happy to help. Keep safe.

Let's perform some steps for you to file your VAT in QuickBooks Desktop, Mark Armistead.

I've checked here on our end and there's no reported case about this one. I appreciate you for providing us a screenshot to better isolate this issue. We can try opening another company file to check if you're having a problem with only one file and not the program itself. Let me show you how:

  1. In your QuickBooks, go to the File menu at the top left.
  2. Choose Close Company.
  3. In the No Company Open window, click the drop-down arrow in the Open a sample file icon.
  4. Choose a sample file and click on it.

Then, try filing your VAT again. If the same something happens, there may be a damaged data on the company file you've been working with. We can run the Rebuild Data tool is built-in to fix any company file data issues. Just follow the steps and detail in the Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file article. We can also repair your QuickBooks Desktop to fix any damaged components in the software.

If the problem persists, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and investigate what's causing this issue. You may send a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead.

Visit our Taxes page for more insights about managing your taxes in your software.

Feel free to update us after contacting our support or performing the solutions, as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Please reply to this post and I'll get back to you. You have a good one.

Hi thanks for the reply.

So closed my company file and opened a sample file. Of course I can't submit a VAT return using the sample file as it asks me to check my VAT registration number so not sure what this is supposed to do to be honest?
