Question

We can't connect to HMRC right now!

Hello, I have been unable to submit by VAT return through Making Tax Digital for over a week with the warning 'We can't connect to HMRC right now'.  I have gone through all of the trouble shooting advice and have not been able to resolve this. Is this a problem anyone else is having? Does anyone have advice of how I might fix it. I have been using the MTD portal without problems since 2019 so at a bit of a loss.

Thank you

Hi JP139, thanks for joining the QB Community - we'll be happy to help get to the bottom of this for you. We don't currently have any reported issues with MTD filings in QuickBooks, and there is currently no scheduled HMRC downtime for the service. Does any specific prompt show when selecting the 'take action' button on your VAT dashboard, and are you able to log into your gateway directly with HMRC as usual? 🧐

Hi, it asked me to reauthorise which I did a few days ago and is now suggesting I check three things

- Have I signed up? Which I have because I have been using it since 2019

- Did I get a sign up email? Which I did back in 2019

- Does my VAT number match HMRC's records? I have double checked this and it does.

I am being advised of error code 'CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED' but wanted to make sure it was just a problem with my account before I contacted HMRC.

I appreciate you for getting back here in the thread, @JP139. I've got some updates about your concern about not being able to connect to HMRC.

Before anything else, know that I recognise the urgency of this matter and I'm determined to help you get this sorted out as soon as possible. As I've checked here on my resources, there's an ongoing investigation regarding this matter. I'd recommend contacting the HMRC so they can add you to the list of affected users. You'll then receive an update from them once it's already fixed.

Additionally, I've got you these articles to give you more of an idea about submitting a VAT return:

@JP139, if there's anything else that you'd like me to help you with or have any additional QuickBooks-related concerns. Our door is open 24/7, and you can always post here again. I'll get back to you right away. Take care!
