I am trying to export customer data to excel but the file is corrupt and does puts all dollar values as zero.

Exported reports or data to Excel are in a protected view, causing zero amounts. You'll want to click on Enable Editing to reveal the values. 

You can also check about customising reports, so you'll be guided on how to filter the data you only need before exporting it to Excel.
