Question

Can you upgrade from Quickbooks online to Quickbooks Enterprise? (we are an Irish company, need a detailed inventory tool and are trying to avoid 3rd-party apps)

Hello there, @emmanuel-parcelh.

There's no direct way to move your account from QuickBooks Online to Enterprise. What you can do is to export and convert your QBO data to QuickBooks Enterprise.

Just to clarify, moving from QuickBooks Online to Enterprise is not an upgrade. It is a migration since QBO is cloud or web-based and runs using the internet while QuickBooks Enterprise is downloaded and installed on a computer.

To export your data, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Login to your QuickBooks Online account and click the Gear Icon.
  2. Choose the Export Data and enter your reason why you're exporting your data. Then, click Continue.
  3. Review your data from the export overview screen. Once ready, click Export to Excel.
  4. In the Exporting from QuickBooks Online page, select Continue to Download.
  5. Then, follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to complete the exporting process.

You can use this article for more step by step instruction when exporting data from QBO to Enterprise: Export data file from QuickBooks Online to Desktop.

I added some screenshots for your visual reference.

Please note that some information may not be included during the moving process. You may check out this article for additional information: Exporting limitations - QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know the result once you've tried the steps. I want to make sure you're able to export your data without any issues. If it requires additional help, let me know by clicking the Reply button below. Keep safe.

Thanks. This is super clear if we decide to transfer to Quickbooks Desktop.

However decision is not yet made. I need to figure out whether the stock feature in the Desktop version (or rather the lack of full stock feature in the online version) is worth the move...

I'll let you know

If you decided using QB Desktop, keep in mind that the multi warehouse feature is only available on Enterprise Platinum. You may purchase the license thru a partner to get a perpetual discount for renewal. Another option, you may pick QBD Pro or Premier and integrate it with a 3rd party inventory management app to have the multi warehouse feature.

@emmanuel-parcelh

If you are using QBO Ireland version or other non-US version, you will need a migration tool. i.e TPExporter for Online, TPImporter for Desktop.

Another option if you are using QBO, company has acquired an inventory management app as part of the family.

Thanks a lot. This is clear.

Do you if the Desktop version has a lot of added functionalities compared to Quickbooks Online?

For me I see two alternatives: 1- Quickbooks Online and I will need to buy add-ons when required (like to be able to follow inventory from one place to another one - which the Quickbooks Online without add-ons cannot do) or 2- Quickbooks Desktop where I may not need add-ons (I'm not even sure it's possible to have some on the desktop version).

Does this apply to those in Canada who wish to transition from QBO to Enterprise ?

Thanks for replying to the thread, @WSLondon

I'm here to provide you with some details on transferring your data from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

There are multiple ways how you can export data from QBO to QBES. Below are some helpful articles you can go through to get more information about the process.

In addition, here's a direct link you can access for Canada's QuickBooks Community: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/ca-quickbooks-community/misc/03/community-ca. I suggest posting to this link directly so you'll get answers relevant to your product and state.

For reference, I'll also attach this module about how your books will move within QuickBooks: Learn how features and data move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

We'll do our best to get back to you as soon as we can. Just leave a reply if you need more help managing your data or QuickBooks. Take the best care!

We're not trying to move to QBO, which is what the links seem to be referring to. In my post I was asking about moving from QBO in Canada to QB Enterprise.
