Good morning.  This site https://www.lifewire.com/504-gateway-timeout-error-explained-2622941 explains the error more clearly than I could.  I recommend rebooting your computer first then trying again.  If you still get the error, try these steps, as recommended in the site above:

How to Fix the 504 Gateway Timeout Error
  1. Retry the web page by clicking the refresh/reload button, pressing F5, or trying the URL from the address bar again.
    1. Even though the 504 Gateway Timeout error is reporting an error outside of your control, the error might only be temporary. Simply retrying the page is a quick and easy thing to try.
  2. Restart all of your network devices. Temporary problems with your modem, router, switches, or other networking hardware could be causing the 504 Gateway Timeout issue you're seeing. Just restarting these devices could help.
    1. Tip: While the order you turn off these devices isn't important, the order that you turn them back on is. In general, you want to turn devices on from the outside-in. If you're not sure what that means, check out the link at the beginning of this step for a complete tutorial.
  3. Check the proxy server settings in your browser or application and make sure they're correct. Incorrect proxy settings can cause 504 errors.
    1. Tip: See Proxy.org for an updated, respected list of proxy servers that you can choose from. There are also several websites that offer free proxy server list downloads.
    2. Note: Most computers do not have proxy settings at all, so if yours are empty, don't worry, just skip this step.
  1. Change your DNS servers. It's possible that the 504 Gateway Timeout error you're seeing is caused by an issue with the DNS servers you happen to be using.
    1. Note: Unless you've previously changed them, the DNS servers you have configured right now are probably the ones automatically assigned by your ISP. Fortunately, a number of other DNS servers are available for your use that you can choose from. See our Free & Public DNS Servers list for your options.
    2. Tip: If not all your network devices are getting an HTTP 504 error but they're all on the same network, changing your DNS servers probably isn't going to work. If this sounds like your situation, move on to the next idea.
  2. If nothing has worked up to this point, contacting the website is probably the next best thing to do. There's a good chance the website administrators are already working to fix the root cause of the 504 Gateway Timeout error, assuming they're aware of it, but there's nothing wrong touching base with them.
    1. See our Website Contact Information page for help figuring out how to contact popular websites. Most major sites have social networking accounts they use to help support their services and some even have telephone numbers and email addresses.
    2. Tip: If it's starting to look like the website might be giving a 504 error for everyone, searching Twitter for real-time information about the site's outage is often helpful. The best way to do this is to search for #websitedown on Twitter. For example, if Facebook might be down, search #facebookdown.
  1. Contact your Internet Service Provider. It's very likely at this point, after following all the troubleshooting above, that the 504 Gateway Timeout that you're seeing is a problem caused by a network issue that your ISP is responsible for.
    1. Tip: See How to Talk to Tech Support for tips on talking to your Internet Service Provider about this problem.
  2. Come back later. You've exhausted all your options at this point and the 504 Gateway Timeout error is either in the hands of the website or your ISP to correct.
    1. Check back with the site regularly. No doubt it'll start working again soon.

Sure would be nice if we could get an estimated time frame?  As today is payroll day I have employees looking my way for guidance.

January 6, 2020

I have clients calling wanting printouts for taxes - just like they did two weeks ago and a week ago etc (when I was still having issues back then)

I wish all you sending me those links with the SAME INFO would just STOP - maybe if you spent that time working on resolving the issue it would get fixed SMH! I don't need to receive repetitive links to the same rehashed information (if I could reply to y'all I'd be like: DO YOU NOT KNOW QB IS DOWN - guess they don't have good communication across the board with their CSRs) *facepalm*

Jumping on the band wagon here. I have money to make. Please fix this.

  Signed: One more squeaky wheel

January 6, 2020

Was finally able to get in going "incognito"  At least got payroll done!

January 6, 2020

I tried to get on "incognito" but it did not work.  I am not sure if it is because I have the accountant's copy and have many clients on it or what!  I hope they fix this soon as no work means not money for me!

January 6, 2020

Kstar1 I hate hearing/reading that! Especially since the Accountant's version was one of the ones that they are showing (all day) as being operational! That was what I stated about payroll etc that said operational when they were not. UGH Having a loss of funds for the day I can relate! I'd send QB an invoice when it fixes the issue - or at least chat/call and say you should receive some sort of credit IMO. Fingers crossed (and eyes, legs and more) that yours will be up soon!

My online does not work (incognito etc) it's the desktop version that's working. I'm so far behind and trying to get last 5 clients to pay - two will be hard (I see collections in my near future on those two UGH)

Wishing and sending luck!!!

Hi there, keith62,

We encourage everyone to access their QuickBooks Online (QBO) account through web browsers. This is to get the most out of QuickBooks experience.

Our Product Team is investigating the bad gateway error when loading companies in the desktop app. I recommend contacting our QBO Technical Team so they can add your account to the investigation (INV-35885). This way, you'll be able to receive an update regarding the issue via email.

Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Log in to your account using the supported browsers.
  2. Click Help (?) at the top right.
  3. Select Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.
  4. Enter a brief discussion of your concern, then click Let's talk.
  5. Choose a way to contact us.

I appreciate your patience and understanding while we look into this matter.

While all of this may be true, I kept having this issue only on Chrome. I clicked on the padlock icon to the left of the URL, and changed the Flash entry to "Allow". Chrome then asked for a reload, and lo and behold, I was able to get in. Don't know if this permanently fixes it, but I'm in!

This happened to me and I went to Help and cleared Cache and then reset app data and it worked!

There are many HTTP status codes sends to the users and one of them is 504 gateway timeout error and this error occurs when your request is unable to complete by servers. When you visit any site then the site grants your request and sends it to web servers and if your request is unable to complete then the server sends back the error to you.

To know that what is 504 gateway timeout and what does 504 gateway timeout mean then you need to read this content.

504 gateway timeout error is a server-side error and this error occurs when the servers are not able to complete a request due to miscommunication between the servers.

504 Gateway Timeout error that means that if the server tries to connect with another server but could not be able to receive an immediate response from another server. It is an HTTP status code that shows on your screen. The error occurs between servers on the internet or an issue with an actual server.

In other words, 504 errors usually indicate that a different computer, one that the website you’re getting the 504 message on doesn’t control but relies on, isn’t communicating with it quickly enough.

  1.  The first thing that you can do when you see error code 504 is to refresh the browser or you can close the browser and then revisit to the URL again but if you still see the error, don’t worry since this error is not your fault.
  2.  You can restart all your devices if you are using on mobile then restart the device. If you are using any modem, router, switches, or other networking hardware can also be the reason for this error. Restart everything and then try again.
  3. 3. Change your DNS Servers.

Ok, wait! Let me explain this. The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. When users type domain names such as ‘google.com’ or ‘nytimes.com’ into web browsers, DNS is responsible for finding the correct IP Address for those sites. Browsers then use those addresses to communicate with origin servers to access website information.

    4. The last reason can be your ISP provider responsible for this error. Contact them if you don’t get a solution from the above three possible reasons for the error
